The neighborhoods of Milwaukee include a number of areas in southeastern Wisconsin within the state's largest city at nearly 600,000 residents. Two residents of the same neighborhood may describe different neighborhood boundaries, [ 1 ] which could be based on ZIP codes, ethnic groupings, or simply personal opinion.
During the first half of the 20th century, Milwaukee was the hub of the socialist movement in the United States. Milwaukeeans elected three Socialist mayors during this time: Emil Seidel (1910–1912), Daniel Hoan (1916–1940), and Frank Zeidler (1948–1960), and remains the only major city in the country to have done so.
As of 2011, 13 counties had elected county executives: Brown, Chippewa, Dane, Fond du Lac, Kenosha, Manitowoc, Milwaukee, Outagamie, Portage, Racine, Sawyer, Waukesha, and Winnebago. 23 had an appointed county administrator, 34 had an appointed administrative coordinator, and 2 had neither an executive nor an administrator.

As of 2018, Wisconsin had some of the highest property taxes in the country. The state's average effective property tax rate is 1.96%, (median real estate taxes paid: $3,257) the ninth highest average of any state in the U.S. [9] As of 2016 West Milwaukee was the ninth highest taxed ($32.38 per $1000 of assessed value) municipality in the state of Wisconsin.
