MT 83 starts at the intersection with MT 200 at Clearwater Junction, about 40 miles (64 km) east of Missoula, and runs north-northwesterly, mostly through broad, forested valleys and along scenic lakeshores within the Lolo National Forest, Flathead National Forest and Swan River State Forest, before curving west to its northern terminus at MT 35 about 3 miles (4.8 km) north of Bigfork.
Primary access is via Montana highway 83 and logging roads to the east, but there are several western routes leading from the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribe's adjoining Mission Mountains Tribal Wilderness. The wilderness is approximately 80 miles (128 km) north of Missoula, Montana and 65 miles (105 km) south-east of Kalispell, Montana.
Missoula is the hub of its Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) economic area, which includes the Montana counties of Flathead, Lake, Lincoln, Mineral, Missoula, Ravalli, and Sanders. [65] As of 2011 [update] , the BEA listed the economic area population at 306,050. [ 66 ]
Blue Mountain is the western landmark of the city of Missoula and is a popular recreational destination for golfing (disc golf) hiking, off-road motorcycling, horse riding, shooting and hunting. In the past it was used as a military training site.
The Gleim Building, 265 W. Front St., Missoula, Montana, was a brothel constructed in 1893 for Mary Gleim, a notorious madam who owned at least eight "female boarding houses". This building serves as an example of a vernacular adaptation of Romanesque architecture .
Montana Highway 200 and Montana Secondary Highway 210 (former U.S. Route 10) pass through the CDP, leading west 5 miles (8 km) to the center of Missoula. The two highways split in Milltown, with Highway 200 leading northeast 159 miles (256 km) to Great Falls and Highway 210 leading southeast through Piltztown to join Interstate 90 at Clinton .
