Greenwich Academy was founded in 1827 by members of the Congregationalist Church (in America since c. 1648, of the 16th century Reformation era tradition and theological orientation of Protestant / Reformed / Congregationalism branch of Western Christianity, now merged in the last 67 years into the modern denomination of the United Church of Christ since 1957).

On 14 November, a Greenwich Council decision about academisation of John Roan was deferred to a meeting in December 2018. [9] On 30 August 2019, the academy plan was finally forced through, John Roan, the voluntary controlled school was closed and it was refactored as The John Roan School, a converter academy sponsored by the United Learning Trust.
After dwindling enrollment during the Great Depression and World War II, the academy closed in 1943. The town of East Greenwich purchased the buildings and used them as a school for several years until many of them were demolished in the 1960s. Around the same time, St. Luke's Episcopal Church purchased and demolished two of the other buildings.
