MerCruiser sterndrives and inboards range from 135 to 430 horsepower (320 kW) and Mercury Racing outboards produce up to 450 horsepower (340 kW) and sterndrives to 1,750 horsepower (1,300 kW). Subsidiaries include Mercury Precision Parts and Accessories as well as Mercury propellers and Mercury Jet Drives.
BMW Marine, in conjunction with ZF, designed and manufactured a new stern drive unit. These stern drives were marketed as the BMW Z-Drive. Uniquely, these stern drives utilized a multiple wet clutch system. These drives competed with Sweden's Volvo Penta and Mercury Marine's Mercruiser Division of Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Later that year Kiekhaefer used his boat engineering and NASCAR skills to develop the 100 hp stern drive engine now known as MerCruiser. When Kiekhaefer resigned as president of the company in 1969, the company name changed to Mercury Marine. In 1970 he founded Kiekhaefer Aeromarine Motors, building racing engines.
Starting in 1983, OMC began to prepare the way for a new stern-drive engine, to supersede previous models. After reviewing the stern-drive market, the company sent interviewers to dealers and service department personnel, gathering information for the ideal stern-drive engine. The result was the OMC Cobra, introduced in 1985.
The business also manufacturers sterndrive and inboard drive systems such as the Volvo Penta IPS. [3] The engine program comprises petroleum fuel ( diesel and gasoline ) engines with power outputs of between 7.5 and 1,500 kilowatts (10 and 2,039 PS ; 10 and 2,012 bhp ).
