[1] When the act was implemented in January 2008, unqualified staff working in veterinary practices before 2004 had a period of six months to apply for provisional registration which conferred the same rights and responsibilities as full membership. The hospital has its origins in the Letterkenny Union Workhouse and Infirmary which was designed by George Wilkinson and opened in Kilmacrennan Road in 1844. The ATU Donegal Letterkenny (formally Letterkenny Institute of Technology [28]) (LYIT; known locally as The Regional and The IT), which is situated east of the town centre on the Port Road, is a training centre for technicians, offering courses in engineering, information technology, materials science, design, business and nursing.
The institute offers over 130 programmes that range from one to four years in computing, engineering, design, science, the "social science" of business, veterinary practice, nursing and law. The courses are offered at levels 6 through 10 on the NQAI framework. Courses are offered in a semesterised and modularised method.
As of October 2018, Sligo IT was reportedly working with GMIT and Letterkenny IT to potentially form a Technological University for the West/North-West of Ireland. [11] In October 2020, the constituent IT's were allocated over €5.5 million towards transformation. [12] Formal approval was granted in October 2021. [13]
In December 2019, Dr. Orla Flynn was appointed president of GMIT, [4] succeeding, Dr. Fergal Barry who was appointed in 2015 [5] and resigned, in May 2019.
