Both the men's and women's Pitt basketball teams moved to the Petersen Events Center in 2002. In 1999, Fitzgerald Field House underwent $3.8 million ($7 million today) in renovations of existing facilities and a major addition to the west side of the building for locker rooms, team dressing rooms, and training and equipment rooms. However, the "Aero-Zone" failed to catch on while the Oakland Zoo continued to grow, transitioning into the Petersen Events Center when it was opened in 2002 and filling the larger student section of the "Pete". The group is now an officially recognized student group of the university, and with over 3,000 members, is the largest such group.
