Temple began playing organized football in 1894, a decade after the school was founded. Physical education instructor and basketball coach Charles M. Williams organized an 11-man squad that won their first game against Philadelphia Dental College. [3]
The Owls represent Temple University in the NCAA's American Athletic Conference. Although Temple began competing in intercollegiate football in 1894, [ 1 ] the school's official record book only includes records from after Temple became a Division I-A (now FBS) program in 1971.
