Au Sable Light is an active lighthouse in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore west of Grand Marais, Michigan off H-58. Until 1910, this aid to navigation was called "Big Sable Light" (not to be confused with Big Sable Point Light [ 7 ] near Ludington, Michigan on Lake Michigan or Little Sable Point Light south of Pentwater, Michigan ).
The station was originally named "Petite Pointe Au Sable Lighthouse", which is the name used on most official records; officially, however, the name was changed in 1910. [21] Although commonly called "Little Sable Point Light", it is listed by the National Park Service as "Little Point Sable Light". [1]
A historical marker in front of the lighthouse reads: Called Grande Pointe au Sable by French explorers and traders, Big Sable Point was an important landmark for mariners traveling a treacherous stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline between Big Sable Point and present-day Ludington. In 1855 twelve ships wrecked in that area.

The park visitors center, which is open year-round, is located off H-58 on Sand Point Road at the west end of the park. The highway turns due east and runs through an intersection with H-13 (Connors Road). Leaving town, H-58 becomes Munising–Van Meer–Shingleton Road and enters the national park.
The state park encompasses multiple ecosystems including sand dune, forest, wetlands, and marshlands. [3] The park contains the southern 2,820 acres (11.4 km 2) of the Big Sable Dunes complex, with the Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness, immediately north of the park, preserving the northern half of the complex.
The city of Au Sable never recovered and surrendered its city charter in 1931 and returned to township control. [5] [6] Due to its location along the Au Sable River and Lake Huron coastline, a lighthouse was established at the river mouth to aid ships that were used to transport the large lumber supplies.
