Dotsero is located at the confluence of the Eagle River with the Colorado River, along U.S. Highway 6 and Interstate 70, near the head of Glenwood Canyon, approximately 5 miles (8 km) west of Gypsum. The Dotsero CDP has an area of 993 acres (4.017 km 2 ), including 125 acres (0.506 km 2 ) of water.
Dotsero Crater is an elongate, 2,300 ft (700 m) long by 1,300 ft (400 m) wide, maar incised into sedimentary strata of the side of a mountain, called Blowout Hill, and local, irregular, mountainous topography. At an elevation of 7,316 ft (2,230 m), its north rim lies about 330 ft (100 m) higher than its south rim.
Near Wolcott, it turns west, flowing past Eagle and Gypsum, and joins the Colorado at Dotsero, in western Eagle County. Its flow ranges from 200 cu ft/s (5.7 m 3 /s) in late summer of dry years to 7,000 cu ft/s (200 m 3 /s) during spring runoff. Acid mine drainage from the abandoned Eagle Mine has entered the river. From Dotsero to Bond, Colorado is the former Dotsero Cutoff, built by the D&RGW as a connection between their main line with the main of the unfinished Denver and Salt Lake Railroad, which provided the connection from Bond to Denver, Colorado.

The canyon stretches from near Dotsero, where the Colorado receives the Eagle River, downstream in a west-southwest direction to just east of Glenwood Springs, on the mouth of the Roaring Fork.
