In the north of the county, it lies 6 miles (10 km) to the west of the town of Swindon and 10 miles (16 km) northeast of Calne. The town was granted royal patronage in March 2011 by Elizabeth II in recognition of its role in the early-21st-century military funeral repatriations , which passed through the town.
South Swindon, formerly Central Swindon South, [2] is a civil parish in the town of Swindon, in the ceremonial county of Wiltshire, England. The parish covers the southern part of the central area of the town, including the Old Town area, and extends south to take in Wichelstowe and Coate Water. In 2021 it had a population of 62,871.
An express bus route will link part of the area to Swindon town centre, and a park-and-ride site with 1,000 spaces will be provided. The abandoned Wilts & Berks Canal crossed the area from south to north-east on its way to join the Thames near Abingdon, and the line of the canal is protected to allow for its potential future reinstatement. The two parishes were united in 1981 [21] and following the 1989 building of a church in the Swindon suburb of Shaw, the parish was renamed West Swindon and the Lydiards in 1996. [5] Further reorganisation in 2017 separated the Lydiards and created the benefice of North West Swindon and Lydiard Millicent [22] where All Saints' is the sole church.
