The highway was originally proposed on June 8, 1925 from Brenham east through Navasota and Conroe to Cleveland, roughly paralleling a local railroad line. [2] By 1926, the section from Brenham to Navasota was transferred to SH 90. On April 6, 1932, a proposed extension east to Moss Hill was designated. [3]
Navasota is located in southwestern Grimes County, east of the Navasota River (a tributary of the Brazos River).It is 71 miles (114 km) northwest of Houston. Texas State Highway 105 is the main east–west route that passes through the center of Navasota, leading southwest 25 miles (40 km) to Brenham and east 41 miles (66 km) to Conroe.
Continued growth in the Bryan/College Station, Conroe and northwest Houston regions have congested existing roadways, including SH 105 and FM 1774. Texas A&M University and businesses in the Bryan/College Station area would benefit from faster connections to Bush-Intercontinental Airport, the Port of Houston and the Texas Medical Center.
Toll road (as of October 28, 2022) continues as the Aggie Expressway (maintained by TxDOT) from FM 1774 in Pinehurst to SH 105 near Navasota in Grimes County. The segment north of FM 1774 near Todd Mission is a two-lane freeway without tolls. [4] [5]
