The XII Army Corps was not ordered to active duty prior to World War II, and was located in Manhattan as of 7 December 1941 in a reserve status. [2] The headquarters, XII Army Corps was redeaignated on 19 August 1942 as Headquarters, XII Corps, and ordered into active military service on 29 August 1942 at Columbia, South Carolina .
The corps now numbered 12,300 present for duty, including the non-combatants; it contained 22 regiments of infantry and three batteries of light artillery. It was the smallest corps in the army. It was not engaged at South Mountain, although it marched in plain view of the battle that was raging on the mountain's side, ahead of its dusty columns.

During the first week of the Normandy landings and the Battle of Normandy, Bradley's First US Army formed the right wing of the Allied lines. They were joined during July by the Third US Army, under the command of General George S. Patton, to form the Twelfth Army Group. Twelfth Army Group became operational in France on 1 August 1944.
