Plague Songs is an album of songs about the ten Plagues of Egypt described in the Book of Exodus performed by various artists. The songs were originally commissioned by the British arts organisation Artangel for its project The Margate Exodus, which centres on a one-day event that took place in Margate on 30 September 2006. While watching the scene of the final plague killing every Egyptian first-born child, Cliff Burton remarked "Whoa – it's like creeping death", as the plague was represented by a fog rolling into the Pharaoh's palace. The band liked the sound of "creeping death" and decided to write a song about the plagues, with the phrase as its title. [6] [5]

Because Pharaoh Ramesses refuses to free the Hebrews, Egypt is struck with ten plagues. Only after the final one, during which Pharaoh's beloved son dies, are the Hebrews freed. However, Pharaoh's heart is hardened once more due to him being unable to accept his son's death, and decides to try to re-capture them.
