George Street is the central thoroughfare of the First New Town of Edinburgh, planned in the 18th century by James Craig. [ 1 ] The street takes its name from King George III [ 2 ] and connects St Andrew Square in the east with Charlotte Square in the west.

He settled in Edinburgh in 1827, living at 14 George Street in the New town. [2] He sent a portrait to the first exhibition of the Royal Scottish Academy. In 1834 he married the wealthy heiress Jane Gilbert of Yorkhill. He added her name to his, and moved to her native Glasgow.

Hamilton & Inches' old showroom on George Street, Edinburgh. In 2016 Hamilton & Inches celebrated 150 years of business. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II visited the jewellers to mark the occasion, and was presented with a bejewelled bowl designed after a loch on the river Tay. [12] In 2021 the Hamilton & Inches main showroom underwent a restoration.
Charlotte Square is a garden square in Edinburgh, Scotland, part of the New Town, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The square is located at the west end of George Street and was intended to mirror St. Andrew Square in the east. The gardens, one of the collection of New Town Gardens, are private and not publicly accessible.
