On February 14, 1981, Grein was elected Bishop of Kansas at a special diocesan convention at Grace Episcopal Cathedral in Topoeka. He was consecrated bishop on May 22, 1981, by Presiding Bishop John Allin. As Bishop of Kansas, he ordained the diocese's first female priest and helped to revitalize the diaconate and diocesan structure. [2]
