Vanguard Sailboats was founded in 1967 in Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA by Peter and Olaf Harken. The brothers started to gain attention after their sailing hardware was used on boats that won Olympic gold in 1968 , and after Vanguard supplied the Finn class for several countries in the 1976 Olympics .
The company specialized in the design and manufacture of fibreglass sailboats. [1] The company was founded by Fraser McGruer and Hubert Vandestadt in 1965. Vandestadt was the main designer for the company and also the nephew of naval architect E. G. van de Stadt, a pioneer of 20th century sailboat design. [1] [2] [3]
The mold was created by using the hull of one of the wooden boats and the resulting fiberglass boats retained the distinctive wooden board imprints from the mold. The Islander 24 features a trunk cabin, but the raised deck Islander 24 Bahama version proved a bigger commercial success and the Islander 24 had a relatively short production run.
