It is the type site for the Folsom tradition, a Paleo-Indian cultural sequence dating to between 11000 BC and 10000 BC. The Folsom site was excavated in 1926 and found to have been a marsh-side kill site or camp where 32 bison had been killed using distinctive tools, known as Folsom points .

From radiocarbon dating, the site was used 10,980 BP ± 75 yearsBefore Present [ 5 ] or about 9,000 B.C. [ 6 ] The post holes and an area about 150 square feet indicate that there was a structure at the site.
