The U.S. layout follows the ANSI convention of having an enter key in the third row, while the UK layout follows ISO and has a stepped double-height key spanning the second and third rows. MacOS provides support for diacritics using either a "press and hold for pop-up menu" or a more extensive 'dead-key' facility.
The keyboard layout options can be modified under System Preferences. The options to choose are "Adding Esperanto circumflexes (supersigno)" and the appropriate keyboard layout (Qwerty or Dvorak). A third level shift key is also required under "Key to choose 3rd level," e.g. LeftWin. [3]

These combinations are intended to be mnemonic and designed to be easy to remember: the circumflex accent (e.g. â) is similar to the free-standing circumflex (caret) (^), printed above the 6 key; the diaeresis/umlaut (e.g. ö) is visually similar to the double-quote (") above 2 on the UK keyboard; the tilde (~) is printed on the same key as the #.
English: ISO keyboard layout (105 keys) with UK engravings. Compared with the source image, the mechanical and visual layouts are different. The color scheme and legends have also been changed in order to better reflect the various key functions.
