Thorpe Park opened in 1979 but was not a theme park when opened. It was always planned and developed as an outdoor activity park with water sports etc. There were no permanent structures on the site other than the dome, model world and some small temporary fairground rides (which were pay-per-ride), it was just a wide open grassland.
