In 2003, the All Japan Kendo Federation (AJKF) introduced a set of basic exercises using a bokutō called Bokutō Ni Yoru Kendō Kihon-waza Keiko-hō. This form of practice is intended primarily for kendo practitioners up to Nidan ranking, but can be beneficial for all kendo students. [6] Suburitō (素振り刀) are bokken designed for use in ...
Kendo (Japanese: 剣道, Hepburn: Kendō, lit. ' sword way ' or ' sword path ' or ' way of the sword ') [1] is a modern Japanese martial art, descended from kenjutsu (one of the old Japanese martial arts, swordsmanship), that uses bamboo swords as well as protective armor (). [2]
The art contains twelve forms (kata) and were developed in part by Shimizu Takaji and by a committee tasked with the creation of a compact Jōdō system to be taught mainly in Kendo dojos. [1] The result was the Zen Ken Renmei Seitei Jōdō system containing twelve forms ( kata )and twelve basic techniques ( kihon ).
Kendo practice at an agricultural school c.1920. The person at right in the foreground is in chūdan-no-kamae, the person at left is in jōdan-no-kamae.. Chūdan-no-kamae (中段の構え:ちゅうだんのかまえ), sometimes shortened to Chūdan-gamae or simply Chūdan, is a basic weapon stance in many Japanese martial arts.
In jōdan-no-kamae, the sword is raised above the head with the tip (kissaki; 切先) pointing back and the blade facing up, in readiness to strike. [1] It is the most aggressive stance of the five. There are commonly two types of jōdan-no-kamae, left ( hidari ; 左) and right ( migi ; 右), referring to which foot is out in front.
Bokuto Ni Yoru Kendo Kihon-waza Keiko-ho is a new form of bokken training that is directly translatable to bogu kendo. Bokuto Ni Yoru Kendo Kihon-waza Keiko-ho also facilitates learning the Nihon Kendo Kata, and because of this was adopted by the All Japan Kendo Federation for use in primary and secondary school.
Japanese kendo is more uniform and sport-oriented, focusing on scoring points through quick strikes to defined targets, whereas kumdo encompasses a broader range of styles and techniques. Haidong Gumdo incorporates dynamic and aesthetically pleasing sword forms that reflect the fluidity of ancient battlefield maneuvers. [citation needed]
The twelve seitei-gata are standardised for the tuition, promotion and propagation of iaido within the kendo federations. Although not all kendo dojo teach seitei iaido, the AJKF uses them as a standard for their exams and shiai. As a result, seitei iaido has become the most widely recognised form of iaido in Japan and the rest of the world. [1]
