Butcher's Broom is an epic, historical novel by Neil M. Gunn written and published in 1934, and re-titled Highland Night for its first American printing in 1935. [1] Based on a semi-fictionalised account of the Highland Clearances in Sutherland, the novel deals with the decline of Highland culture [2] in a wide scope of pre-Clearance and post-Clearance life, as well as the Clearances themselves.
Crofting communities were a product of the Highland Clearances (though individual crofts had existed before the clearances). Previously, Highland agriculture was based on farms or bailtean, which had common grazing and arable open fields operated on the run rig system. An individual baile might have between five and ten families as tenants.
