Brainkind (formerly The Disabilities Trust) is a UK charity founded in the 1980s [1] [2] in Burgess Hill, West Sussex, as The Disabled Housing Trust.Brainkind provides residential, day services, care, rehabilitation and support to meet the needs of people with acquired brain injury (ABI), traumatic brain injury (TBI) and neurological conditions. [3]
The trust was established as Sussex Partnership NHS Trust in April 2006, and became a NHS Foundation Trust with teaching status in August 2008. [4] In 2013 the trust set up a joint venture with the company Care UK to purchase a 32-bed rehabilitation unit in Gosport, and to create a 24-bed self-contained accommodation unit later in the year. [5]
A fund was set up to pay allowances to widows and dependents of deceased members of the West Sussex Constabulary. The members resolved to wind up the fund, and money was left over. Money had come from (1) the members themselves (2) raffles and sweepstakes (3) collecting boxes (4) donations and legacies.

The facility, which was financed by a trust fund established by Zachary Merton, was opened as a convalescent home in April 1937. [1] It became a maternity hospital in 1939 [2] and, after joining the National Health Service as the Zachary Merton Maternity Home in 1948, [3] it became a community hospital in 1979.
