‡ In Canada, a cup was historically 8 imperial fluid ounces (227 mL) but could also refer to 10 imperial fl oz (284 mL), as in Britain, and even a metric cup of 250 mL. Serving sizes on nutrition labelling on food packages in Canada employ the metric cup of 250 mL, with nutrition labelling in the US using a cup of 240 mL, based on the US ...
The cup is a cooking measure of volume, commonly associated with cooking and serving sizes. In the US, it is traditionally equal to one-half US pint (236.6 ml). Because actual drinking cups may differ greatly from the size of this unit, standard measuring cups may be used, with a metric cup commonly being rounded up to 240 millilitres (legal cup), but 250 ml is also used depending on the ...
Prior to metrication, in the United Kingdom, the standard single measure of spirits in a pub was 1 ⁄ 6 gill (23.7 mL) in England and Northern Ireland, and either 1 ⁄ 5 gill (28.4 mL) or 1 ⁄ 4 gill (35.5 mL) in Scotland. After metrication, this was replaced by measures of either 25 or 35 millilitres (0.176 or 0.246 gi), at the discretion ...
The teaspoon, tablespoon, and cup are defined in terms of a fluid ounce as 1 ⁄ 6, 1 ⁄ 2, and 8 fluid ounces respectively. The fluid ounce derives its name originally from being the volume of one ounce avoirdupois of water, [ 21 ] but in the US it is defined as 1 ⁄ 128 of a US gallon.
I'm in Canada, and all the measuring cups in the kitchen show 250 mL on a metric scale on one side, and 8 oz. on a presumably US customary scale on the other side. When filled to 8 oz., the level is short of the 250 mL mark, I suppose at 237 mL if the scales are agreeing with the conversion math. One of the cups is identified as from the US.
Take a second to look at the plastic cups stashed in your cabinets for a future backyard party. You’ll notice several lines on each 16 oz. cup.
The US Customary system of units makes use of set of dry units of capacity that have a similar set of names [Note 7] to those of liquid capacity, though different volumes: the dry pint having a volume of 33.6 cubic inches (550 ml) against the US fluid pint's volume of 28.875 cubic inches (473 ml) and the imperial pint of 34.68 cubic inches (568 ...
A measuring cup is a kitchen utensil used primarily to measure the volume of liquid or bulk solid cooking ingredients such as flour and sugar, especially for volumes from about 50 mL (approx. 2 fl oz) upwards. Measuring cups are also used to measure washing powder, liquid detergents and bleach for clothes washing. The cup will usually have a ...
