Vernon was named after Mount Vernon. [6] The Vernon post office was established in 1817. [7]Vernon was the site of a near-battle on July 11, 1863, during Morgan's Raid. John Hunt Morgan demanded the surrender of the town, which was defended by 100 local militia in strong positions on hills and bluffs overlooking the Muscatatuck River and 178 Union troops under the command of Colonel Hugh Williams.

According to the 2010 census, the county has a total area of 378.34 square miles (979.9 km 2), of which 376.58 square miles (975.3 km 2) (or 99.53%) is land and 1.76 square miles (4.6 km 2) (or 0.47%) is water. [4] It is a rural county, with majority of the county consisting of personal farms and woodlands.
