The first drug, clomifene, [25] has a chloro-substituent on the ethylene side chain which produces similar binding affinities as the later discovered drug tamoxifen. Clomifene is a mixture of estrogenic ( cis-form ) and antiestrogenic isomers ( trans-form ). [ 24 ]
Antiestrogens include selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) like tamoxifen, clomifene, and raloxifene, the ER silent antagonist and selective estrogen receptor degrader (SERD) fulvestrant, [6] [7] aromatase inhibitors (AIs) like anastrozole, and antigonadotropins including androgens/anabolic steroids, progestogens, and GnRH analogues.
A number of non-SSRI drugs are not associated with sexual side effects (such as bupropion, mirtazapine, tianeptine, agomelatine, tranylcypromine, and moclobemide [57] [58] [59]). Several studies have suggested that SSRIs may adversely affect semen quality. [60] [61]
They have important effects in many tissues in the body, including in the female reproductive system (uterus, vagina, and ovaries), the breasts, bone, fat, the liver, and the brain among others. [1] Unlike other medications like progestins and anabolic steroids, estrogens do not have other hormonal activities. [1]
Certain side effects, like breast enlargement, reduced premenstrual symptoms, and less oily skin/greasy hair, could be beneficial. Side effects often could not be unambiguously attributed to spironolactone due concomitant use of other medications, particularly birth control pills.
Side effects associated with dienogest are the same as those expected of a progestogen. [7] They include menstrual irregularities, headaches, nausea, breast tenderness, depression, acne, weight gain, flatulence, and others. [14] Dienogest produces no androgenic side effects and has little effect on metabolic and lipid hemostatic parameters. [34]
The side-effects profile varies for different patient populations. [51] Overall adverse effects in treatment are similar between men, women, geriatric, pediatric, and racial groups. [5] Lamotrigine has been associated with a decrease in white blood cell count . [54] Lamotrigine does not prolong QT/QTc in TQT studies in healthy subjects. [55]
Side effects of antihormone therapy are generally minimal, but can produce similar feelings to menopause in women. [4] Common symptoms of all antihormone therapies include irregular menstrual cycles, hot flashes, weight gain, vaginal dryness, headaches, mood swings and hair thinning. [ 4 ]
