Crucifixion in popular art, as with modern art, is sometimes used for its shock value. For example, a World War I Liberty bond poster by Fernando Amorsolo depicts a German soldier nailing an American soldier, his arms outspread, to the trunk of a tree. Crucifixion imagery is also used to make points in political cartoons.
Batoni represented Jesus with long hair and a short beard, holding in his left hand an inflamed heart with a crown of thorns and with a cross at the top. Batoni's artwork became popular for the official image for the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. [1] The portrait is the most notable painting of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
The Sacred Heart is often depicted in Christian art as a flaming heart [5] shining with divine light, pierced by the lance-wound, encircled by the crown of thorns, surmounted by a cross, and bleeding. Sometimes, the image is shown shining within the bosom of Christ with his wounded hands pointing at the heart.
The Asian bleeding-heart grows to 120 cm tall and 45 cm wide. It is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial with 3-lobed compound leaves on fleshy green to pink stems. The arching horizontal racemes of up to 20 pendent flowers are borne in spring and early summer. The outer petals are bright fuchsia-pink, while the inner ones are white.
