From The Telegraph: “Whooo, yeah!” Jon Batiste whoops. The flamboyant composer and pop star – bright green suit, hair straight out of a Basquiat painting – is one of the most thoughtful, articulate musicians you could ever hope to meet, but he just loves a spontaneous expression of enthusiasm.
Jon Batiste has departed The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on CBS after seven seasons as the show’s bandleader. Louis Cato has been promoted from interim bandleader and will take over permanently. “We've been so lucky to have a front row seat to Jon's incredible talent for the past seven years,” Colbert said on the show.

This is kind of expected. He’s had an insanely productive couple of years. Working on several movies AND recording an album AND getting married AND dealing with his wife’s health issues all while having a daily gig as a band leader on a late night tv show must have been incredibly stressful.

Jon batiste had a charisma to him that acted as a theatrical enhancement to the show. I just feel that there is a huge missing part of the show when someone as talented as Jon leaves. Edit: I totally understand that Louis is actually taking one for the team and stepping up for the show.
💯 I remember some musician saying that Prince once said that his inner monologue is music, not conversation. I remember thinking, “holy shit. This artist is on another level”. I feel like Jon is the same. He simply vibrates at a different wavelength, and it’s lovely. The Netflix doc about him and his sweet wife was so beautiful.
