The original Athens High School was a charter member of the Southeastern Ohio Athletic League (SEOAL) in 1925. The consolidated high school also competed in the SEOAL from 1967-2008. The Athens 1925 football team was the first Bulldog team to win SEOAL championship and the 2008 wrestling and tennis teams were the last sports teams to win the SEOAL.

State Route 682 near Athens. State Route 682 (SR 682) is a north–south state highway in the southeastern portion of the U.S. state of Ohio. The southern terminus of State Route 682 is at a trumpet interchange with US 33, US 50 and SR 32 in Athens. Its northern terminus is at SR 13 in the village of Chauncey, Ohio.
