Smart Communications Inc., commonly referred to as Smart, is a wholly owned wireless communications and digital services subsidiary of PLDT Inc., [1] a telecommunications and digital services provider based in the Philippines. [2]
This became effective from November 15 – December 31, 2012, when the last Digitel Business Centers were closed. [2] However, Digitel retained the operation on its subsidiary, Sun Cellular. Sun Cellular eventually ceased to operate on April 25, 2022, following its integration with PLDT's wireless firm, Smart Communications. [3] [4]
Moving forward, on April 1, 2000, Piltel signed a facilities-sharing agreement with competitor Smart Communications to be able to provide wireless services using Smart's GSM network. [2] By the same day, Piltel launched its GSM brand, Talk 'N Text. In March 2004, Smart Communications acquired 45.3% stake in Piltel from its parent PLDT. [3]

This partnership resulted to a rapid construction of Smart's network and more importantly, the subsidization of handsets. Smart was also authorised to offer both international gateway and cellular telephone services. At the end of 2005, Smart became the largest cellular operator in the Philippines with over 15.4 million subscribers.
