It then becomes known as Dover Road between the Stewart-Montgomery County line and the city of Clarksville. [ 4 ] US 79 then runs concurrently with US 41A on the northwestern side of Clarksville, and it then turns left to bypass the downtown area, while beginning its concurrency with SR 13 for the remainder of its path to the Kentucky state line.
The Tipton County portion from the Shelby County line to just the northeast of State Route 384 is a four-lane divided highway. Long-term plans include expanding the Shelby County portion to at least four lanes as well. Northeast of the Buladeen area, the highway ascends to over 3,500 feet (1,100 m) through a series of switchback curves as it passes over a cross ridge between Holston Mountain and the Irons, where it enters Johnson County.
