Lake Whitney was created in 1951 when the United States Army Corps of Engineers constructed a dam on the Brazos River in order to prevent flooding in downstream communities such as Waco. The area consists of rolling, tallgrass prairies; cedar trees; hardwood timber; and 100 ft (30 m) bluffs and rock points. Lake Whitney is also part of the Texas Lakes Trail Region of North Texas. Whitney Dam is a concrete gravity and rolled-earth dam, 166 feet high, owned and operated by the United States Army Corps of Engineers.
The community is situated at the southern end of Lake Whitney, near the dam. Following the completion of Whitney Dam in the early 1950s, Laguna Park became a recreation destination. Small stores and a post office opened to serve the surrounding agricultural area as well as visitors to Lake Whitney.
Lakeside Village is located at the intersection of Farm to Market Roads 56 and 927 on Lake Whitney, 15 mi (24 km) northeast of Meridian and 50 mi (80 km) south of Fort Worth in northeastern Bosque County. [2] It is also located 28 mi (45 km) southeast of Glen Rose and 53 mi (85 km) west of Hillsboro. [3]
In 1922, D. ("Doctor Dee") Scarborough, the druggist of Whitney installed a bench outside of his store. Within a short period of time, the bench became home to the local old men seeking refuge from the sun and women; comfortably installed on its well-worn planks, they whittled, spat tobacco juice on the sidewalks, studied the weather and damned the modern world with lordliness and venom.
