Iowa Highway 9 is the most northern of Iowa's east–west highways, traversing the entire northern tier of counties. It runs from the eastern terminus of South Dakota Highway 42 at the South Dakota border east of Sioux Falls, South Dakota near Benclare , to the Wisconsin border at Lansing where it continues as Wisconsin Highway 82 .

The opening came after some controversy from the now-defunct Argosy Casino Sioux City, who had its license revoked by the Iowa Racing & Gaming Commission in 2014. [7]

US 18 begins at the Big Sioux River approximately two miles (3.2 km) east of Canton, South Dakota. It runs easterly through rural Lyon County, in the northwestern corner of the state. At Inwood, it meets Iowa Highway 182 (Iowa 182), which provides access to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, via Iowa 9 and South Dakota Highway 42.
It intersects the northern terminus of SD 17 approximately three miles (4.8 km) west of the city. The central segment of SD 42 ends at Ellis Road near the Sioux Falls city limits. [4] The easternmost segment of SD 42 begins at Six Mile Road east of the city of Sioux Falls. It runs southeast, concurrent with SD 11 along Arrowhead Parkway.
