The name "Otay" comes from the Kumeyaay word otai, which means "brushy". [3]On March 16, 1991, a Hawker Siddeley HS-125 airplane carrying seven members of singer Reba McEntire's band, plus her business manager and two pilots, crashed into the side of the mountain after taking off from nearby Brown Field Municipal Airport, killing all ten on board.
The Otay Mountain Wilderness is a U.S. wilderness area in San Diego County, California, 12 miles east of the community of Otay Mesa and just north of the Mexico–United States border. Some parts of the wilderness area rise quickly from sea level, reaching a peak of just over 3,500 feet (1,100 m) at the summit of Otay Mountain.
On the western side of the mountain lies Lower Otay Lake and Otay Mesa, with Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility and other detention centers and law enforcement properties lying on the southwest slope of the mountain. Cedar Canyon is a valley of the San Ysidro Mountains in San Diego County, California, [1] extending from the northern slopes of Otay Mountain in the south to Otay Lakes Road in the north. Part of it is in the Otay Mountain Wilderness.
About 52% of the wilderness area is in Alaska, with 57,425,569 acres (89,727.452 sq mi; 232,393.03 km 2) of wilderness. They are located in 44 states (excepting Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, and Rhode Island) and Puerto Rico. The NPS has oversight of 43,890,500 acres (68,578.9 sq mi; 177,619 km 2) of wilderness at 61 locations.

The San Pedro Parks Wilderness is located in southern Rio Arriba County in northern New Mexico and part of the Santa Fe National Forest. It is 41,132 acres (16,646 ha) (64 sq miles) in size. Elevations range from 8,300 feet (2,500 m) in the southwestern corner to 10,592 feet (3,228 m) at San Pedro Peaks near the center of the Wilderness. [1]
