The Baird group was purchased by House of Fraser in 1970 with the Hamilton store relocated to a new building later the same year. The Bairds stores, including Hamilton, were renamed Arnotts in 1982. House of Fraser sold the Hamilton store in 1989 to a management buyout led by Murdoch McMaster, after which the store reverted to the Bairds name.
