"If" is a song written by American singer-songwriter David Gates in 1971. Originally popularized by his group Bread, "If" charted at No. 4 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 when released as a single in 1971 and No. 6 in Canada. It also spent three weeks at No. 1 on the U.S. Easy Listening chart, [1] and one week at the top of the Canadian AC chart.
David Ashworth Gates (born December 11, 1940) [1] is a retired American singer-songwriter, guitarist, musician and producer, frontman and co-lead singer (with Jimmy Griffin) of the group Bread, which reached the top of the musical charts in Europe and North America on several occasions in the 1970s.
Bread was an American soft rock band from Los Angeles, California.They had 13 songs chart on the Billboard Hot 100 between 1970 and 1977. According to the book 1000 UK No. 1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh, at his father's funeral, a friend took David Gates aside and said, "Your dad was so proud of what you were doing." David agreed, "My success would have been so special to him as he was my greatest influence. So I decided to write and record 'Everything I Own' about him.
Manna is the third studio album by American soft rock band Bread, released in 1971.The title, like that of the preceding album On the Waters, is a Biblical pun on the name Bread, in this case the manna from Heaven which was fed to the Israelites.
