Saint Mary's continued to be a male-only school until 1970, [9] when it became coeducational. Since then, more women have come to the college and by 2011, 62% of the students were women. [10] In the 1970s, the college was well known by secondary schools throughout the San Francisco Bay Area for producing the Saint Mary's Math Contest. [11]
The group originated in England in 1966 as the Process Church of the Final Judgment, [10] co-founded by Mary Ann MacLean, who was married to former church member and Best Friends Animal Society co-founder Gabriel Depeyer, [11] and who lived on Best Friends' sanctuary grounds until her 2005 death.
Founded as St. Mary's Institute, the school opened on Aug. 25, 1852, with a faculty of five and an enrollment of twelve boys. [8] In 1921, all college classes were transferred from downtown to the St. Louis College campus. In 1923, St. Louis College became St. Mary's College with an enrollment of twelve in the freshman class.

The original college at this location, St. Mary's College, was founded by the Jesuits in 1848 as an Indian mission. [2] The school is the site of the first cathedral west of the Missouri River and east of the Rockies, [3] the 1851 "log cathedral" of Bishop John Baptist Miège, S.J., Apostolic Vicar of Kansas under Pope Pius IX known familiarly as "The Bishop East of the Rockies".
