In 1926, the U.S. state of Arkansas renumbered its highways into a more traditional format. The system to be replaced was established in 1924 as Arkansas' first comprehensive highway plan. The Arkansas Highway System is made up of all the highways designated as Interstates, U.S. Highways and State Highways in the US state of Arkansas.The system is maintained by the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ArDOT), known as the Arkansas State Highway Department (AHD) until 1977 and the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) from 1977 to 2017.

The concrete horseshoe arch reads "Entering Arkansas" on one side and "Entering Missouri" on the other. The Mississippi County, Arkansas Road Improvement District built the arch in 1924 after paving the highway; it erected a similar arch over the highway at the Crittenden County line, but the other arch was removed in the 1950s.
The route was designated on July 1, 1931. [2] In Arkansas, it replaced State Road 2. US 82 was realigned around Waldo and Magnolia on February 25, 1954 on to present-day US 371. The former alignment of US 82 was redesignated at Highway 98. [6] On May 20, 1970, this segment was bypassed by a new terrain US 82.
