A Roman road runs from Radipole to Dorchester (the former Durnovaria), and indeed still forms by far the greater part of the line of the present road between Weymouth and Dorchester. The parish of Radipole predates by centuries the borough of Melcombe Regis , which grew up on its wastes on an exposed spit of shingle by the sea in the 12th century.
The harbour forms the mouth of the River Wey as it enters the English Channel. The original Roman port at Radipole to the north was lost to silting (forming Radipole Lake), and the current harbour further downstream, lying between Weymouth Old Town and Melcombe Regis, started to develop in the 12th and 13th centuries.
The two boroughs, Melcombe on the north shore and Weymouth on the south, were joined as a double borough in 1571, after which time the name Weymouth came to serve for them both. Nevertheless, Melcombe Regis remained a separate parish [1] and became a civil parish in 1866. In 1911 the parish had a population of 10,952. [2]
Radipole Lake is a lake on the River Wey, now in the English coastal town of Weymouth, Dorset, once in Radipole, the village and parish of the same name. Along the western shore of the lake, and between Radipole and the town centre of Weymouth, now lies the modern suburb of Southill .
The river has been important since Roman times, when Radipole Lake was used as a reservoir. [2] The town of Weymouth was established by two harbour villages (Weymouth itself and Melcombe Regis) either side of the mouth. [3] The river was important for milling during the 18th and 19th centuries, when there were five water mills based along it.
