The township surrounds the borough of East Butler but is a separate entity. The unincorporated communities of Herman, Brinker, Vogleyville, Bonnie Brook, Wadsworth, and Carbon Center are located in the township. U.S. Route 422, the Benjamin Franklin Highway, crosses the township, connecting Butler to the west with Kittanning to the east.
Franklin Township is located in west-central Butler County. It is bordered by Brady Township to the north, Clay Township to the northeast, Center Township to the east, Butler Township at the southeastern corner, Connoquenessing Township to the south, the borough of Prospect to the west and south, Muddy Creek Township to the west, and Worth Township to the northwest.
Marion Township is located along the northern border of Butler County, with Venango County to the north. The unincorporated community of Boyers is in the southeastern part of the township. Slippery Rock Creek flows through the southeast part of the township past Boyers. Murrinsville is near the eastern border of the township.
