Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC is an American professional soccer team based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Founded and beginning play in 1999, [ 7 ] [ 8 ] the club plays in the Eastern Conference of the USL Championship , the second tier of the American soccer pyramid. [ 9 ]
The franchise was awarded to Heasley and his ownership group known as Alliance Soccer Resources, Inc. and became the first professional team in Pittsburgh in 30 years. [6] Heasley, based in Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania , wanted to create role models and a pathway to a professional career for local talent. [ 7 ]
The club's women's team was founded as a separate organization, competing in the Women's Premier Soccer League through the 2019 season. [1] [9] Ahead of the 2020 season, Steel City FC merged with the Pittsburgh Hotspurs. [10] The team joined United Women's Soccer for the 2021 season. [11]
Mexico won the 2009 Gold Cup by beating the United States 5–0. In the 2011 Gold Cup, Mexico defeated the USA 4–2 in the final while the USA won the 2013 Gold Cup by beating Panama 1–0. Since the formation of the Gold Cup in 1991, the CONCACAF Championship has been won nine times by Mexico, seven times by the United States, and once by Canada.

Pittsburgh got another AFL team in 2011, the Pittsburgh Power, which folded in 2014. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers played in the AFL's minor league af2 until that league disbanded in 2009. In addition to NFL and arena football teams, Pennsylvania is also home to minor professional teams from numerous other leagues.
