All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Rishikesh (AIIMS Rishikesh) is a medical college and hospital based in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, India. [2] [3] The institute operates autonomously under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. [4] It is one of the Institutes of National Importance in India.
The foundation stone of AIIMS Delhi was laid in 1952. [2] The first AIIMS was established in 1956 under the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Act, 1956. AIIMS was the first Indian medical center to perform a successful cardiac transplant. The surgery was performed by P Venugopal, the ex-director of AIIMS, in 1994. [34] AIIMS is an advanced center of stem cell therapy in India, especially cardiac and neurological. It holds a reputation of being a pioneer in stem cell injection.
