The White Rock Wildlife Management Area (WMA) was designated in 1976 as 280,000 acres (110,000 ha) of protected area within the boundaries of the Ozark National Forest.The WMA is owned by the U. S. Forest Service and managed under the provisions of a Memorandum of Understanding by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, and is situated in the Boston Mountains of Northwest Arkansas.
In 1971, free-roaming horses were found on 53.8 million acres of federal land, designated as herd areas. From this land base, 31.6 million acres became HMAs, of which 26.9 million acres are managed by the BLM. [15] In addition, some herd areas still are identified as having free-roaming horse populations. [10]
The proposed expansions, if fully implemented, would preserve almost 600,000 acres (2,400 km 2) of land in the White River watershed. Additional parcels of conservation land owned by the state of Arkansas and private conservation groups are contiguous with the national wildlife refuges.

Contiguous with the refuge on the east is the Big Lake Wildlife Management Area, owned by the state of Arkansas. It comprises 12,320 acres (49.9 km 2) and is open for hunting deer, waterfowl, and small game. The wildlife management area consists mostly of bottomland hardwood forests.

Richland Creek Wilderness is located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. Created by an act of Congress in 1984, the wilderness covers an area of 11,801 acres (48 km²). Contained within Ozark-St. Francis National Forest , the wilderness is managed by the U.S. Forest Service .
