In 1969, the School of Business and Economics evolved out of the former School of Law, Business and Economics at the University of Münster. Since 1902, the latter had itself offered all the courses relating to Law, Business Studies and Economics. During the 1960s, the number of students taking economics courses increased substantially.
The central library of the university is the Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Münster (ULB), which is also the regional library of Westphalia. As of 2011, the library owns more than 6.2 million volumes of which 2.68 million volumes are held in the ULB, while 3.53 million volumes are held by the 146 faculty and department libraries.

From 1965 to 1969, the University and Library Düsseldorf gradually developed out of the Medical Academy in Düsseldorf. There is no real founding year of the ULB, but the foundation stone for an integrated library system was laid when the former State and City Library of Düsseldorf was taken over by the university in 1970 and merged with the Central Library of the former Medical Academy.
