New Kent County was established in 1654, as the Virginia General Assembly with the governor's consent split York County. [3] The county's name originated because several prominent inhabitants, including William Claiborne, recently had been forced from their settlement at Kent Island, Maryland, by Lord Baltimore upon the formation of Maryland. According to signage on the segment of New Kent Highway between U.S. Route 60 (US 60) and I-64, SR 249 extends slightly south from I-64 to end at US 60. SR 249, which is the old alignment of SR 33 before that highway was rerouted onto I-64, is the main local highway of northern New Kent County, providing access to the county seat of New Kent.

Known as Courthouse Road, the state highway runs 13.53 miles (21.77 km) from SR 5 in Charles City north to SR 249 at Carps Corner. SR 155 connects Charles City and New Kent, the county seats of Charles City County and New Kent County, respectively, with each other and with U.S. Route 60 (US 60) and Interstate 64 (I-64).
Crump's Mill and Millpond is a historic grist mill and mill pond located near Talleysville, New Kent County, Virginia. The mill is dated to the 1870s, and is a simple rectangular two-story frame structure with a gable roof. Much of the mill machinery survives at Crump's Mill.
