The Saskatoon Light Infantry was an infantry regiment of the Non-Permanent Active Militia of the Canadian Militia (now the Canadian Army). The regiment was formed in 1924, when The North Saskatchewan Regiment (1920–1924) was reorganized into four separate regiments.
It was redesignated as the 1st Battalion, The Saskatoon Light Infantry (Machine Gun), CASF, on 7 November 1940, then as the 1st Infantry Division Support Battalion (The Saskatoon Light Infantry), CIC, CASF, on 1 May 1943 and finally as the 1st Battalion, The Saskatoon Light Infantry (Machine Gun), CASF, on 1 July 1944.
The 5th Battalion was authorized on 10 August 1914 and embarked for Great Britain on 29 September 1914. It entered the theatre of operations in France on 14 February 1915, where it fought as part of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Brigade, 1st Canadian Division in France and Flanders until the end of the war.
On 6 August 1914, Details from both the 52nd Regiment Prince Albert Volunteers and the 105th Regiment (Saskatoon Fusiliers) were placed on active service for local protection duties. [ 2 ] On 10 August 1914, the 5th Battalion (Western Cavalry), CEF was authorized for service and on 29 September 1915, the battalion embarked for Great Britain.
The 65th Battalion recruited in Saskatoon and Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and Winnipeg, Manitoba and was mobilized at Saskatoon. [2] The 65th Battalion was commanded by Lt.-Col. N. Lang from 20 July 1916 to 25 September 1916. [2] The 65th Battalion was awarded the battle honour THE GREAT WAR 1916. [2]
