In March 2012, Puerto Rico contracted with Corrections Corporation of America to send as many as 480 inmates to CCA's Cimarron Correctional Facility near Cushing, Oklahoma. [14] The three-year contract was brought to a premature close in June 2013 after unit-wide fights and "disruptive events", with the inmates sent home.
MDC Guaynabo is located next to Fort Buchanan U.S. Army base, [1] and is 6 miles (9.7 km) west of San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico. [2] In the wake of the destruction of Hurricane Maria in September 2017, some 1200 federal prisoners were transferred from Guaynabo to the Federal Correctional Institution, Yazoo City in Mississippi. The facility was first opened in 1986 as a Community Therapy mental health unit (Comunidad Terapéutica de Guerrero) of the Puerto Rico Department of Health. It became a correctional facility in March 1997. As of 2008 about a third of its inmates were pre-trial detainees, and the others were serving longer sentences at minimum security. [2]
In 2004, the Government of Puerto Rico ordered the eviction of the state prison because it was deemed too expensive to readjust the structure to newer and modern facility standards. In 2014, the government ordered the demolition of the property to make room for a scientific park, "Ciudad de la Ciencias".
