The walking foot mechanism preferred by leather sewers is triple feed, with the feed dog, needle and inside foot moving in sync as the outer presser foot lifts and lowers. The feet are usually smooth. I call this compound feed. The Singer 111w155 is one of the most sought after used compound feed machines.

I have had three Thompson walking foot machines over the years and got pretty good at setting them up. Two of them I picked up pretty cheap. One had the needle in backwards and they cold never get it to sew.
If you intend to sew veg-tan or bridle leather, do not get a dual feed walking foot machine. Get a triple/compound feed walking foot machine with smooth bottom feet. If you need a harness stitcher, get one that has a smooth feed dog, like the big Cowboy, Cobra and Techsew 441 clones.
Nothing converts a straight stitch machine into a walking foot machine. Adding a bigger motor to a domestic machine does not make it industrial. However, you appear to be in the Jackpot. The machine is manually oiled.

Singer 7-33 from the factory has 9/16" of foot lift, but often people like us will cut and weld some part to make it 1" of foot lift. Quote.
The only portable sewing machines that can even remotely handle leather work are those made and sold by Sailrite. Period. They have dual feed; top and bottom, via serrated or pebble grain teeth on the feet and feed dog. The inside foot and needle are static. The outer foot moves in sync with the dog.
Interests:Restoring vintage Singer sewing machines. Depends on what you consider as walking foot. Walking foot is not a "firm term" I would say. Though MOST leather workers and dealers consider triple feed (combined top feed, bottom feed and needle feed) as walking foot. However you sometimes even find a plain top feed machine (like Singer 29K ...
