The OP has a 94 7.3L IDI to swap in. Most people don't know that the 94 factory turbocharged 7.3L IDI was a much better engine than the prior models. The engine came from Navistar with the turbo, so it was beefed up considerably to deal with the higher power.

Priming/Bleeding 1990 7.3 idi. 1990 Ford F350 7.3L IDI. Buddy's newest trade-up came dry as a fart. I'm a reefer mechanic by trade and to be honest, I'm kind of spoiled with the Hand-pump for dummies. How do we go about getting fuel to the get-happy zone (inj pump/injectors)

Many IDIs are in the low to mid 200s for horsepower with the typical tiny aftermarket turbo kits, and a 1st gen 7.3L Powerstroke will only do about ~250HP with cheap/easy mods (Intake, tune, exhaust). For what injectors and a T4 will cost you, you can build a pretty serious IDI as well.

On my 7.3 idi im running a 4" dynomax muffler, when i hold it up i can look right through. If you want it to sound good make sure you run the pipe or pipes all the way to back to make it sound more deep.

If you go small block you should go with a 351W block from 96+ with hydraulic roller cam, And slap a big bump stick in there, if you want a good cam stay away from fords alphabet series stick to comp or crane! Use a holley truck avenger carb! With some nice aftermarket heads its an easy 400+ hp.

  9. Is the 7.3L diesel (non-Power Stroke) any good? - Pirate 4x4

    www.pirate4x4.com/threads/is-the-7-3l-diesel-non-power-stroke-any-good.585038

94s were the factory turbocharged IDI 7.3Ls. These actually are a completely different engine internally. Much bigger rods, stronger, lower compression pistons, stronger cranks, more webbing in the block, improved cooling and oiling. As was stated before, the most common failure on these engines is headgaskets.

Also get an EGT gauge and then turn up the pump to really increase performance. An open 4" exhaust on a turboed IDI motor sounds absolutely amazing.
