The physics of FM radio wave reception dictates the optimal antenna length, which the manufacturers use. If you shorten the antenna you will reduce the radio’s reception range. If you live near the transmission tower it may not make a noticeable difference but at longer distances it will.
I had given up on stubby antennas since most of them suck, but found this one from Teraflex that actually works great. I have this exact antenna on my 2012 TRD Sport , If you get it be prepared to wait 3 weeks as the seller is in China. It's an awesome antenna, I mostly listen to XM radio but when I do listen to AM or FM radio the reception is pretty good. Only thing I can complain about is the antennas appearance after 5 months is the South Texas Sun. Lol,.

You may have to get a loaded stubby antenna to improve your reception or depending on the radio you may have an adjustment screw that is accessible through the case, if so you can take a NON metal screwdriver, tune the radio to somewhere in the middle of the band on a known AM station then turn the screw slowly until the reception improves.
Stubby Antenna I recently installed a stubby (7" or 8") antenna just to get OEM whip out of the way. There is an occasional change in reception in different areas, but I like the fact that I don't even see the antenna anymore while driving.
