With their normal capacity of 170 hm 3 and a total surface area of 23.2 km 2, they could, if they formed a single lake, be the third largest artificial lake in France, on a par with Lac d'Orient; [18] they are also part of the Orient Forest Regional Natural Park. They were impounded in 1990, making them the last Seine lakes to be built.

The Haute Seine, from Paris to Montereau-Fault-Yonne, is 98 km (61 mi) long and has 8 locks. [11] At Charenton-le-Pont is the mouth of the Marne. Upstream from Paris seven locks ensure navigation to Saint Mammès, where the Loing mouth is situated. Through an eighth lock the river Yonne is reached at Montereau-Fault-Yonne.
River cruise boats tie-up here and the shores of the basin are also the location of the MK2 Quai de Loire and MK2 Quai de Seine theatre complexes which are the most modern in France. [2] A small electric passenger ferry, the Zéro de conduite, is available for transporting people from one side of the basin to the other.
The Bois de Vincennes, on the eastern edge of the city, is the largest park in Paris. The Bois de Vincennes has a total area of 995 hectares [2] (2,459 acres), making it slightly larger than the Bois de Boulogne, (846 hectares / 2,091 acres), the other great Parisian landscape park located at the western side of the city.
